Volunteer Firefighter: As a volunteer fire fighter I attend bushfires (both local & interstate), structural fires, road traffic incidents and training sessions with my local Brigade and district in addition to courses run by TAFE NSW and the NSW Rural Fire Service in order to maintain skills and experience in rural fire fighting techniques. I am also the brigade training officer. My paid employment always takes precedence to my volunteer employment as a Fire-fighter. Duties: • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; ability to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions in a high pressure environment • Maintain physical conditioning necessary to perform efficiently in emergency situations; meet medical and physical agility standards as established • Learn the geography of the District, the location of important buildings and the road system • Participate in training drills; attend training on fire fighting, hydraulics, first aid and emergency first aid, fire equipment, and apparatus, and other training associated with recognised fire fighter standards • Learn and apply technical information pertaining to fire fighting • Assist in performing pro-active inspections of structures and businesses in the community for fire hazards and pre-incident surveys for tactical planning • Assist in conducting fire-safety education for the community • Analyse and cope with a variety of emergency situations calmly but effectively and to react quickly to secure accurate and precise information on the location, extent, and nature of fires and emergency aid requests and make sound judgement decisions in a high-pressure and hostile work environment • Sustain heavy physical labour during prolonged periods of intense activity in emergency situations; to work at varying heights above grade • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with different crews, supervisors, and the general public; to work effectively as a team member • Service and operate all District equipment and apparatus • Perform necessary maintenance, testing and care of fire hoses, trucks, ladders, and auxiliary equipment and apparatus • Prevent waste and damage of materials, supplies, and equipment • Identify general maintenance and minor repairs to station facilities; organise requests for maintenance and repairs as required • Perform community service activities. • Maintain necessary records and reports, incident forms, and daily shift operation logs, to accommodate needs of the district including computer data entry.
